Letter to District 12: Week of 11/9

Friends,

Our country is facing some really dark times. Those in power actively campaign against working families to become wealthier, against truth and science to silence opposition, and instill our neighbors with fear and propaganda to isolate us from each other. The opposition shares a watered-down, focus-grouped message that lacks vision and continues to drive people away from the Democratic Party.

We have an airline in Delaware – Avelo Airlines – that was happy to take your tax dollars to set up shop at Wilmington Airport, and now is taking money from the federal government to assist in the illegal kidnapping and deportation of our neighbors.

We have food banks all across Delaware that are struggling to keep up with the needs of hungry people – some of whom affected by the longest government shutdown in our history – as we approach Thanksgiving.

We have leadership that tries to convince us that up is down, and wrong is right. To ignore the problems we see with our own eyes, so they can cling onto power with outdated ideas. All the while, your grocery prices continue to rise, our hospitals remain overcrowded, your health insurance premiums are skyrocketing, our schools aren’t getting the job done, our roads are crumbling, and your property tax bills are through the roof.

But there is so much hope.

I spent the last week knocking on doors and meeting people where they are. I was invited to an LGBT bowling league (and I got TWO strikes, thank you very much!!). Steve and I went to a Halloween party with my friends in Forty Acres. I met many families in Fairfax and the Highlands who shared their stories.

One of the most meaningful experiences this week was the protest against Avelo Airlines that Steve and I participated in at Wilmington Airport. I met so many new likeminded people who are yearning for a return of a Democratic Party willing to fight back. And there were many people who shouted words of encouragement on DuPont Highway and honked their horns.

Delawareans do not stand for mistreating their neighbors, and we don’t support businesses that would dare to harm the people we love.

Keep making your voice heard. We are on the right side of history in fighting back against greed, avarice, misinformation, and authoritarianism.

There are many who will stand with you.

I am one of them.

I wish you all a safe, happy, and healthy week with your loved ones.

Until next time,

Dr. Rob Bahnsen

Candidate for State Representative, District 12
